LAUNCH OF MBALI BOERDERY FARM
In a significant milestone marking South Africa’s 30 years of democracy, Mbali Boerdery (Pty) Ltd proudly announced the launch of its black-owned commercial cattle farm in Bergville. Founded by Mr. Sydney Mbali Bongani Makhubo, the farm represents a beacon of hope and economic empowerment in rural KwaZulu-Natal.
Established initially as an informal operation in 2014, Mbali Boerdery (Pty) Ltd officially registered in 2018, laying the foundation for its remarkable journey of growth and impact. Today, buoyed by a vision of prosperity and backed by Ithala Development Finance Corporation (IDFC), the farm stands poised for expansion and success.

With IDFC’s support, Mbali Boerdery (Pty) Ltd secured funding of R5.8 million in October 2023, facilitating the acquisition of 231 pregnant breeding cows, bolstering the farm’s herd to a robust 269. This injection of capital has enabled the farm to scale its operations and further its commitment to sustainable beef cattle production.
Presently, the farm focuses on the meticulous management of its pregnant cows, with plans underway to introduce 8 bulls during lactation. Anticipating the future, Mbali Boerdery (Pty) Ltd aims to commence the sale of weaners six months from inception, marking a pivotal step towards long-term viability and growth.
Mr. Sihle Mkhize, Chairman of the Board of Directors at IDFC, underscores the significance of this endeavor, stating, “This venture embodies the resilience and potential inherent in our communities. By empowering entrepreneurs like Mr. Makhubo, we not only foster economic growth but also nurture the spirit of innovation and enterprise in rural areas.”
While celebrating this achievement, IDFC reiterates its commitment to driving socio-economic transformation, particularly in underserved areas. The corporation calls upon the government to continue its support for initiatives that empower small and medium-sized enterprises (SMMEs) in townships and rural regions, ensuring equitable access to resources and opportunities.
For over 65 years, IDFC has been at the forefront of facilitating economic development in KwaZulu-Natal Province. Through tailored financial solutions and unwavering support for local businesses, IDFC remains dedicated to realizing the full potential of the region’s entrepreneurial spirit.
