Ithala brings Madiba joy to Umlazi elders
Members of the Vukani Community Centre in Umlazi received a pleasant surprise on Mandela Day when they were visited by the executive management and staff of Ithala Finance Development Corporation.
The visit was aimed at dedicating 67 minutes to a worthy cause in commemoration of Nelson Mandela’s contribution to human rights.
Upon arrival at the centre, the Ithala team immediately set about cleaning the yard, clearing the vegetable garden of weeds and painting window sills and burglar bars.
Ithala Acting Chief Executive Siphiwe Madondo looked at home in the kitchen where he helped prepare a scrumptious meal for the centre’s senior citizens.
Ithala’s staff wellness specialists also conducted a mini clinic where they tested Vukani residents’ cholesterol and blood pressure levels.
Madondo said Ithala would always strive to uplift the community, not only on Mandela Day but on a daily basis.
“In upholding the ideals of ubuntu espoused by our beloved Nelson Mandela, Ithala further commits itself to going the extra mile...we will repaint the Vukani Community Centre and also provide new signage for its walls,” he said.
Ithala also donated groceries, desks and chairs to the centre.
The centre, which is situated in Umlazi’s W-section, provides care and support to senior citizens.
An Adult Basic Education and community vegetable gardening program is also run at the centre.
